Letter to the Archbisshop of New Orleans

Dear Ms. Ellis,

The immigrant community across the United States is under such violent, cruel and merciless attacks that I am writing to you to beseech the Archbishop to take extraordinary means to be with that community, many of whom share his faith. Could the Diocese create a sacred space among those communities? They could have ongoing masses, teach-ins, meals and celebrations to highlight Christ's and the Church's mission to the poor, refugees, the oppressed. Bishops, clergy and officials could rotate being present - possibly even setting up an encampment; invite clergy from other faiths to join in. Encourage the participation and support of your parishioners. Wrap the cloak of God's love around the immigrant community to counter the horrible fear and abuses that we've seen perpetrated in city after city in recent months.

Such actions might be the spark needed to warm the hearts of those who would bring further suffering and fear to those already fleeing persecution and suffering. Modeling how to see the face of God in our neighbors in a direct and upfront way can only move us forward in the renewal of compassion and unity that our nation so desperately needs.

Thank you so for bringing this thought to the Archbishop and your community.

We are the ones we've been waiting for. May we act now to care and serve each other.

In love and courage,

Brian Dyer Stewart
