So the day finally came that my son was terminated by DOGE from the CFPB. He was a senior attorney with them, having served for 12 years in the Fair Lending office and then the enforcement division where his cases returned tens of millions of dollars to defrauded citizens and helped banks, debt agencies and others come into compliance with the law so that going forward such fraud and discrimination would be eliminated, truly serving both consumers and the finance industry.
He grew up in Downeast Maine, attended the local high school, went to Bates and then to the University of Maine Law School where he was in the top of his class. After graduating he clerked for a Maine Supreme Court judge and then went to work for the CFPB, his “dream job” where he could use his skills as a public servant protecting consumers.
I’m not worried about his future or prospects for work – he’s an accomplished lawyer, incredibly ethical, a hard worker and is well respected by his colleagues. What I am worried about is our country under the present administration which would do away with regulation and oversight of the highly capacious finance industry, would abandon consumers and citizens welfare for the profit of corporations. The CFPB, though unheralded, benefitted millions of ordinary Americans, returning more than 20 billion dollars to consumers and providing much needed oversight to the banking and finance industry.
The administration is steadfastly destroying the guardrails which were painstakingly created by Congress over many years to curb the excesses of corporations, to safeguard the environment, to ensure health and safety in our food supply and medical care. It’s such a betrayal of your work and of our future. The attacks on education, dissent, immigrants, the media, and political opponents are breathtaking, the power of money to dominate government malignant.
I keep waiting for your voice to rise in resistance, for your power to legislate to be put to work for us to stop the rampages against responsible government that the administration is carrying out in record time. Do you not see the danger that I see, the wanton destruction of agencies and institutions Congress has created and the blatant disregard for law, civil rights and freedom?
Please, please stand up and unite with your colleagues to reign in this lawlessness and damage.
